BALL OF THE MANCHESTER. RIFLES.
The ; anniversary ball of the above corps was iheld m the Feildin? Hall on Friday night. As has always been the case m the past, the gathering was a pronounced success. Upwards "of seventy couples were, present. Among the visitors were representatives of the Alexandra Cavalry, Rangitikei Mounted Rifles, and Wellington Naval Brigade. The members of the Feilding Brass Band mustered m force, and their new uniforms were very much admired. There were also civilians from Palmerston, Marton, Bulls, and the Kiwitea, and other parts of the district. The hall was decorated with flags of all nations, stars of sword bayonets, and crossed rifles. The reflection of the brilliant lights on the flashing steel had a very pleasing effect. The gentleman who completed this work exhibited considerable taste. The appearance of the room when crowded with dancers was very attracttive, the. becoming dresses of the ladies blending with the scarlet and blue uniforms of the volunteers, which were again brought into clear relief by the ►ombre black of the civilians, the whole making the prettiest picture we have yet seen m the hall. The charming strains of Mr King's band gave a double zest to the enjoyment of the dancers. We cominond the managing committee for providing such excellent music,as this alone was a great factor m the success of the evening. The supper was provided by Mr Gould, of Clairville House, and reflected infinite credit upon him. Everything on the table was of the best, while the attention of those m charge, under the direction of Mi* Stevens, was noticeable for its excellence. We hope to see Mr Gould frequently to the fore m acting as c.iterer. Mr Fred Roe was Mas ter of Ceremonies. He perform id the difficult duties nf his position with tact and efficiency, giving satisfaction to everyone without one exception. Dancing was kept up with spirit until a late hour next morning. — Star,
