Last- week the Postmaster-General communicated with the United States Government with regard to a subsidy, for the San Francisco mail service, and he has received a favourable reply, viz., that the United States • Government will give. £4000 per annum; towards the ser vice, unless the Congress forbids it. It is understood that the Postmaster-Gene-ral has almost come to an agreement with 'New- South Wales respecting the service, and that a contract will be negotiated during, the present week. No action is being taken by the Colonial Secretary with a view to landing the circua horses now quarantined, at Auckland.; It is now thought necessary, to communicate with the other colonies, and it is held to be undesirable under any circumstances, considering the large' exportation of horses from this colony to New South Wales, to permit the circus stock to be landed. Colonol Wliitinore, commander of the colonial forces, left for Lyttoltbn to-day for the purpose of being present at the testing operations which are to be fonducted m connection with' the fortifications at Port Lyttelton. , .
