The Hutt Tarring Outrage.
THE PERJURY CASE.
In dismissing the information against S. Waters, charged with wilful and corrupt perjury m the Huft tarring caao, Mr Wnrdnil, B. M., Chairman of thn • Bench, said that, .having considered, nil the evidenge.given -foii the prosecution and the accused, and having weighed all that had heen urged by,M,r.Shaw and Mr Gully, they had arrived ~\ at^ this conclusion : That while the evidence, given on the Bth September. by tl\e' accused, contained statements vvhicli- were calculated to mislead the Court, thb latter evidence given by him appeared to the Bench so far to explain the evidence given on the first occasion, as to render them indisposed to say that the technical crime of perjury had been committed. They felt that the ''accused had trifled with v his 'path, and ha^ [trifled with the . Court, and that he had equivocated ; and that ■Jincl it not beep for. the explanation; "offered afterwards, it would have been a serious matter.. The Bench hoped that what had happened m this case would bring home to-,tho accused, and. to witnesses m general, the serious responsibility they took with them m going into the witness-box to give evidence. .Th«y wnre prepared- to dismiss the information. (Applause, which was at once suppressed.)
