Mr Todd, Postmaster-General and Superintendent of Telegraphs, South Australia, has been invited to contribute a paper on the " Construction of the Overland Tejegraph Line to Port Darwin " at tha next meeting of the Royal Colonial Institute. The Indian Government confirms the reduction m cable charges on Press messages, to begin from January if Great '■ Britain consents. The Cable Com- | panics will not rednce the charges on public messages, because the Indian Government have refused to concede 2£d per word. The New York Maritime Exchange appeals to President Cleveland to endeavour to subsidise the San. Francisco line. j The strike amongst the employes at ! Sir William Armstrong's factory, at Els wick, has now been satisfactorily settled. The Hon. D. R. Plunkett, Secretary for Works, opposes Irish separation. Forty guineas per cent, is now charged for underwriting the .ship Bengollyun, 1198 tons, which left London for Adelaide on the 28th April. The frozen meat by the Rimutaka is selling at 4M per pound. Sept. 18. Mr Yicary Gibbs, barrister, has been elected a Director of the Queensland National Bank. Sir James Anderson, of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, suggests that all maritime nations should guarantee to telegraph companies a moderate rate of interest on the cost of their obtaining control of all cables. The Spanish Government is making purchases of cruisers and torpedoes. Sir Michael Hicks-Beach states that the Government will not support Mr Parnell.
