He was using a boat which bad only just come out of the builder's repairing' yard, when the craft suddenly collapsed. Strange to say, not a portion of it was left sufficient to sustain Hanlan m the water, and he was' compelled to swim for half a mile. By this time he was exhausted ; but his critical position was observed by those on bo u'd several vessels m the bay. A boat was put off from the schooner Nellie, but before it reached Hanlan he had sunk twice. Fortunately Captain Aikman, of the Nellie, who was m the boat, managed to grasp Hanlan before he went down, again. He was then taken into the boat an.l conveyed on shore. Hanlan soon recovered himself; but he complained of being very much numbed by the coldness of the water."
