(UNITED PRESB ASSOCIATION.) 'Wellington, Wednesday. A well-known prostitute was charged under tlie amended folice Offences Statute with baingthe occupier of a disorderly house, etc. The prosecution is a private one, being brought by the residents m the neighbourhood of the house, and interest attaches to it through it being the first case under the amended Act. After some evidence had been t'ikc.n, the counsel for the defendant offered, oh hi-r behalf, to close the house and leave the neighbourhood, but the. counsel for the plaintiff, while acknowledging that the 'closing of the house was the primary object, declined to abandon' the case, as on grounds of public morality he was instructed to press for a conviction. The case has been adjourned until Friday.
