Between 9 and 10 yesterday forenoo.i Captain James Ferguson, local agent of the Union Company, accompanied by his six children and Mr and Mrs Arthur Jackson and their two children, took a waterman's boat, at Port Chalmers for the purpose of paying a visit to Mrs Jackson, senr., grandmother of Ihe whole of Iho children. The party proceeded'down harlior under sail, and after rounding Acherson Head the weather became exceedingly squally. The sail was wrapped round the mast prior to unshipping it when a sudden gust struck the boat causing her to heel over and precipitated the whole of the occupants into the water. The children were placed on tSe bottom of ihe bimt but she ngain rolled over and the children thrown into Ihe water with the result that four nfdipla'n Ferguson's children n: ined Mary, John, James, and Alexai der, and Cl ristina Jackson were drowned .^Several 'fishermen soeingthj
iiocirlont put off without loss of time and succeeded m saving Maggie and Agnes Ferguson, Mrs Jackson and her daughter Catherine with Captain Ferguson and Mr Jackson. They also recovered the bodies of John and Mary Ferguson. Captain Ferguson is greatly exhausted and almost prostrate with tho grief, the accident following so olosely on the recent death of his wife.
