East and West Coast Railway.

(N.Z. Times Correspondent.) Auckland, Monday. Tho New Zealand Herald says, re East and West Coast Railway and ccr r tain alleged threats made : — " Things have come to a pretty pass when a great work like the Trunk railway, opening the whole interior of the North Island, connecting the present railway system of Auckland and Wellington, is made to depend upon a line which has been pronounced a monstrous absurdity by every disinterested authority ; but if the construction of the Trunk railway is to be stopped because the North Island will not vote for the Canterbury swindle, we still urge that our members should stand firm m resistance. It will only mean a. little delay for us. Whereas if the construction of the East and West Coast Railway can be postponed for a year, the chances are that it will be shelved for a generation. (UNITBD PRESS ASSSOCIATfON.) Nelson, Monday A great railway demonstration m connection with the Nelson branch of the league took place on Saturday afternoon m a paddock near the centre of the town, when it is estimated about five thousand persons were present, many having come m from the country. Every place of business was closed for a couple of hours, the streets were decorated with flags, and bands turned out, but there was no procession owing to a want of time to organise. The greatest enthusiasm prevailed, and the several speakers were cheered. The chief resolution expressed appreciation of the action of the ; Government, and of those members of ■ the House who are loyally supporting the construction of the East and West Coast and the Nelson railway, and called upon every member of the Legislature having the welfare of the Colony at heart to support by every legitimate means the construction of the railway. Resolutions expressing thanks for the loyal support received m Canterbury and the West Coast were also carried with cheers.
