During an inspection of the premises Detective Chrystal picked up a burglar's house-breaking tool just inside the front uoor known to th<v police find burglars as a " wire jisrger." The principal charm m the "jigger" consists m its extreme simplicity. It is merely a piece of thick wire about eight inches m length, the handles being carved into the shape of an ordinary key hnndie, while the other end is bent into a crook." The wire is inserted into the key-hole till the crook becomes entwined m ( the handle of the key. Nothing thon remains to accomplish the opening of the lock, except the simple turning of the. " wire." There is reason to believe that there aie a number of experienced " crackmen " m town', and it therefore behoves householders to be on the lalert. Dr J. Mortimer Granville, publishes m the Lancet a prescription for the relief of gout which, he states, gives satisfactory results m acute and suhacnte gf>"t, reli(!vinsr the P»in almost immediately, inducing th« Bwelt-v ing, and raising the proportion of area m the nri»« from 50 to 100 per cent. The formula he gives is as follows :— Chloride of ammonia four drachms, chlorate of potash two drachms, pure srlycerinb twelve drachms, tincture of iodine two drachms, water twelve ounces ; mix. Dose, two tablespoonsfull every third, fourth, or sixth hour. We (Herald) have just received a telegram from Auckland stating that Mr John Walker of Aramoho, our veteran horse owner, has purchased the imported ' clydesdale champion Loch Fergus. The Auckland Stud Company sold two of his yearling progeny m Melbourne for £165 and £130 each respectively. Mr Walker has also secured the thoroughbred imported horse St. Losrer by Donc.ster, (winner oi the Derby/ from Atalantis by Thormanby. Doncaster.it will be remembered was sold for the sensational figure of Atalantis won sevoral rich stakes m England. So it will be seen that m St. Lecer breeders here will have a most fashionably bred sire. The football match, Wellington College t. Wanganui Collegiate's was won by the former. Score — 24 points to nil. A pretty idea. It is intended to hold a flower show m the Exhibition at We.linsrfcon next month, on a date not yet 6xed. At the P..M. Court, Marton, on Friday before Messrs Beckett and Milne, J Pa., Alfred Reid, charged by inspector R. K. Simpson with having sheep infected with lice, m a public sale yard m Marton on August 7. being a breach of " The Sheep Act Amendment Act of 1874." Defendant pleaded guilty, aod was fined m the minimum penalty of £1, and 7s, costs.— Advocate. Dr Tucker, of Sydney, declares that the Victorian lunatic asylnms ar« in' a worse condition than any m Spain and Italy. Messrs Rnelßon and Co had an excellent attendance at their borsn sale on Saturday last. The two thoroughbred brood mares entered, viz " Laura Bell and Storm," were sold, and also 'a considerable number of hack horses. The Clothing Factory has received samples of spring and summer Tweeds and cloths m every conceivable variety. Also imitation " Bedford Cord," the first manufacture m New Zealand. The Palmerston Lyceum inserts ft notice m this issue to which . the ' attention of our readers is directed. An Auckland telegram states that Dignan, one of the Waitemata pirates has been committed for stealing the yacht Ariel. The first church parade of all headquarter corpstook place at the Cathedral Christohnrcb, on Sunday morning. There was 500 men on parade.
