BREACH OF THE MUNICIPAL CORPORATION ACT.
Cr Pauk, after reading the article m Saturday's issue of the local Times, may well exclaim " Save me from my friends." The journal m question, whose scrupulous misrepresentations and utter disregard for truth are notorious, would lead its readers to infer that the prosecution of Cr Park for illegal acts as a Borough Councillor has been instigated by some of Cr Park's enemies, of whom that gentleman has, unfortunately, /i very large number just at present. We do not believe, that a single individual m the place has taken any steps to induce Mr Graff to institute the present proceedings into-the merits of which, the case being now sub jiulice, we cannot at present enter. We hear that Mr f^AKF has what he . considers sufficient reasons for having taken the step he has, and we also learn that those reasons will be toade public after the case is over. Whether he intends going for other Crs who have broken the law, we do not know, possibly that may depend m the success attending his action against Cr Park. That is a matter for Mr Graff to decide. Cr Paki^s organ weeps m sackcloth ] and ashes because its patron has got into the hands of the Philistines. Well, Cr Park has only himself and his party to thank for the unpleasant predicament m which he finds himself placed. Th'jy were so defiant and so determined and so disdainful of public opinion, and now the dty of reckoning is at hand. They were told the danger they
incurred, but they would not be warned, but simply indulgedin congenial security and abuse. Cr Park we fear will not receive much sympathy m his trouble, which fyas entirely . been of his own begstting. His organ deprecates the terrible fate that awaits " respectable men " who are so ambitious to have seats m the Muriicapal Chamber. If some of these "• respectable men "" would retire from public life no one would weep, and the place would probably survive the calamity. But ifCr Park has no reason to fear the result of the judicial proceedings why is his organ so downcast and also so venomous ? Really, it looks as if the Cr m question and his newspaper protege were rather apprehensive of the final issue. We shall have something to say by-and-bye about the merits of the case, and also about another feature m reference to " common informers " which has lately came under our notice m this town.
