Mr Carter's Mummy.
Mr 0. B.' Carter, of the Wairarapa,^ who wasf orinerly a member of the 1 House of has purchased 1 , an Eevptian muunnjv which he has fowardedto Dr Hector as a gift to the Colonial. Museum. In a letter of the 16th July, advism°- the sending of the curiosity, Mr Carter; gives the following particulars :-r-, 1 " The mummy was found last summer at Achmin (*nciently; Panopolis),^^ Sohaz.on, the -, Nile. The^time .is the Ptolemaic period, 6r -XXXIII Dynasty. '2. It is of the date of the Ptolemies, whose dynasty oominences with thereign of Ptolemy the First, 323 B. C. .Under the Government of the Ptolemies Egypt continued tree till the Battle of Actium, which occurred 30 8.C., when JSgypt finnlly became a province of the Roman Empire. Under these circumstance, the ao-eof thenuunniy m question is at 'leUt 2000 years old ; or,' to be more, accurate, it cannot be les, than 1914y_e^ old, and may even . be as old as 2207 years. '3. The v originalcqst of the case or coffin and first-class embalming, like this specimen, would, according M*M: culation by Herodotus, be aboiit £170 of our present money. The. wood the case is made of i* probably sycamore. A. Ihe translation of hieroglyphic on the lid of tlie mummy found at Acnim, the ancient Panopolis, is as follows:— • Priest 'of the God Khena, nanaed Jeti 3 ™ 3 -' son of the mistress.of the house of Khemi the Priestess Ehem^Nafrion.
