Fire Insurance Meeting.
A meeting of insurers was held m Mr Mowleui's lioom last evening. Present — Messrs Walton, Park, Milverton, Woodroofe, Hall, Wray, andj Allingham. ' Mr Park took the chair and rtad the minutes of last meeting, which were duly confirmed. Correspondence between the Secretary ] Mr T. B. Walton, and the Feilding Secretary, was read. The Chairman said that after, waiting a good many weeks he had written to Messrs Macarthur and Co., Auckland, who had opened a branch of the Manchester Company there, and he had explained the position of affairs and also stuted that negotiations were proceeding with an Australian Company, but nothing had yet been done and they were open to receive an offer from the Manchester Company to insure properties m this district valued at £120,000. In reply to this communication the Chairman had received a reply from the agent m Auckland, Mr F. Nutter, Baying that if an .unqualified offer oi the business mimed, £120,000, was made he would pay a visit to the district at once, inspectthe risks and endeavor to meet the people of this district on the matter. In reply to Mr Allingham the Chairman stated that the rate m the Mana watu District on hotels was 65a, and*the Manchester Company would be 42s 6d v other properties m proportion. He did not think anything would come of the Feilding agitation, they evidently helieved it was no use trying any New Zealand Company and were waiting f° r a reply trom Australia. The Manchester Company which had communicated with tliem had a capital of one million, and was not, he thought, likely to be bound by the tariff. Mr Walton said he believed Mr Thompson, of Feilding, would be prepared to accept, on behalf of Feilding,' any reason-, able offer the Palmerston end might accept. Mr A.llingham said that If this Company were to make the offer to insure at same rates as being paid m Bangitikei it would be the means of breaking up the present iniquitous tariff, and that m his opinion that Company should get the preference of the business He would suggest that the Palmerston business, of some £70,000, should be offered and that the Company should be informed that Feilding would most probably accept the same terms. The Chairman said thcit as far as Feilding was concerned there was no interest taken by them whatever afc the mettino: which he attended there, only some five persons wers present. Mr Allingham suggested that a copy of the list of Palmerston insurers should accompany the letter to the Auckland Company. Mr Woodroofe believed that the agent when he visited Palmerston would be very favorably expressed with the risk. The following resolution, proposed by Mr Milverton, seconded by Mr .^Voodroofe, was then carried — That this meeting make an offer to the Manchester Fire Insurance Company of the insurance business m the Palmerston District to the extent of £71,000 as per list signed by insurers and that Feilding be informed of their aotion and be asked to cooperate. Accounts ot expenses m connection with the meetings held up to date, amounting to £0 6s 4d, were passed for payment on the nW'on of Mr Milverton, seconded by Mr Hall. It was decided t,n call the nexj meeting on receiving a reply from the Auckland agent of tno Manchester Company, l>ut that it would be best to allow him a couple of days to inspoct the town and risks before, so that he might bo m a better position to express his views. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
