'^'■•■.So :/ .r-" In London the effects of a long spell of horrible weather was appalling, and every one is more or less affected. Children have died by hundreds. Scores ot men are'prostrated by sunstroke each day ; and the roads are often blocked by horses falling dead. A new terror was added by the presence of Hydrophobia, making the streets absolutely unsafe, owing to the number of mad dogs. A London despatch states that King Dalmeney, with a large army, had massacred the French m the unprotected villages (2). The King had also captured, according to the Same despatch, 150 French .prisoners, and he and his followers proposed to eat them. The steamer Hecla collided with the London and Liverpool steamer Cheerful m a fog. The latter foundered, and 13 persons were drowned. Mr Gladstone is suffering from ostinall catarrah of larynix. and entire rest is enjoined. It is feared he will not be able to take part m the election campaigh. . A sensation was created m the London fashionable circles by the report of a 'fistic encounter between Lord Lonsdale and Sir George Chetwyn. The fight took place m a wojl-known resort m Rotten Row, and lasted 10 minutes, The affair arose through jealousy over Mrs Langtry, actress. A London special says that ihe scandal involving Sir Charles Dilke is settled so far as the courts and English Press are concerted. The settlement, was completed, it is said, by the cashing of Sir Charles' cheque for £25,0005in favor of Mr Crawford, the aggrieved husband. Mr ' Gladstone writes expressing his confident belief that the newly enfranchised election will declare m favor of the Liblerals. He looks forward with assured confidence to the result of the general election.
