A Peculiar Case.
' (UNITED PRESS ASSOCrATION.) . Christchuucii, Tuesday. ' A peculiar case was brought before the Besident Magistrate's, Court today. A man . named Arthur Savage, whose ■ sanity is doubted, was chareed with travelling on the railway without a. ticket. It appeared that: he has a mania for cheap travelling," as he recently went on board ojie of the steamers, and took a trip, to Wellington. ; \ When he got there he could not pay his fare, and had to do seven days m gaol for his imposition. ;, As soon as he was free, apain 'he quietly i on board the. first; iteamer going 3 to Lytfolton, and took a cheap trip back again. At the end of his return journey he had another period of incarceration junder the Vagrant Act, as it was clear lie had no, intention of paying his passage, and Had no lawful means of suppoit. Inspector Pender paid that most of the railway euartls. knew the accused as a man with a mania for travelling on the ' cheap; ;bu^' occasionally ho got the, better of them, as.in'tiie present case. He had previously ljeen examined by two doctors who could not agree that he was -insane, but as Mr Jieethauii B.M.j thought liis actions more like those of a madman than anything else, a -further examination as- to his sanity was ordered to be made.
