Two tenders wero received for thia contract from Mr W. T. Wood and Messrs Wooloock and Hosking. [We have been requested not £0 pub lish the particulars of the tenders as neither wero accepted.] . The figures of both tho tenders were gone into by the Council and considerable discussion took place as to which was really the lowest tender. Ultimately it was proposed by Cr West and secondod by Cr "King — That the Clerk bo instructed to sco the tenderers and make fresh arrangements with them as to mode of tendering. Tiie Mayor remarked that ho thought the object «f calling tenders had been to get the work done m the cheapest manner iind with the intention oi! accepting the lowest tender, but evidently this was not the object now. He thought that the matter was receiving too much attention and that it should bo settled at on do and the lowest tender bo accepted. Ho would suggest that the Clerk be referred to and that he work out the figures of each tender and ascertain which was lowest and that the Council accept such one. An amendment to this effect was proposed by Cr Bentley. Seconded by Cr Wylds and lost. Cr West's motion was then put and declared carried.. Proposed by Cr Wylds, seconded by Cr Bentley and carried that tenders be called for advertising for twelve months, the lowest or any tender not to be accepted. Cr J. King tabled a notice motion to rescind the resolution existing regarding the advertising of the Council's business. Cr Wost referred to the matter of metalling College-street applied for by Mr McAnulty. This could not bo done at present but the Public Works Committee were of opinion that if the bush on Inspector James property there was foiled it would meet, the requirements for a . time. Cr J.King informed the Council that Mr James intended to fall the bush tit once. ■ • ••■ .. ■■ It was resolved to metal that portion of Main-street beyond Mr Ferguson's house as soon as : possible. • • . Cr . Grace asked the Council to do something m the matter of having necessary water-channels made m Lombardstreet. During the last week the street m question had been impassable. It tt;is resolved to make the channels as required and refer to- the Public Works Committee. On the motion of Cr Park, seconded by Cr Larcotub a hearty vote of thank* was passed to Messrs E.
