An Explanation.
Weare not exactly sure ifwe were not m error m stating, m our reference to Mr Bunny m yesterday's issue, that it was the Manawatu Times which had said that Mr Mason was "an old fogey." Our local contemporary, from time to time published several articles attacking m unmeasured terms the administration 6t the Waste Land Board, as also did the • Wood ville Examiner. It was m one of the two that the expression quoted by Mr Bunny was made use of. However, m case we were m error, we withdraw the allusion to the Times, as, m our opinion, it is more m accord with . the principles : that should regulate journalistic affairs,' to withdraw a statement, if m doubt as to its accuracy, but which might never* theless on subsequent' investigatipnr-provo to be authentic and borne out by facts, than adhere to a statement, coiiscieri' tionsly believing it to be true, but whicli further inquiry might prove to be incbrvect. We do not relish being falsely accused, ourselves, nor would we knowingly make a false accusation against a contemporary. Wo trust Mr Bunny will, at the next meeting of the Waste Landa Board, do us the justics to put the matter right so far as the Standard is concerned. • He can easily ascertain which paper it -vyav that' spoke disrespectfully of Mr Mason, and let him avoid mistakes m names of newspapers, when next he alludes to the subject.
