In his reply on the Local Powers and Finance Bill Sir Julius Yogel gave the following interesting statistics regarding 1 . New Zealand's financial position: — He had taken a balance-sheet showing the actual position of the colony, which was said to be overburdened with debt. The assets on the 31st of March, 1883, were : - Real property, exclusive of Maori lands, i' 101,000,000; personal property £64,000,000 ; public works, including, railways, telegraphs, harbours, &c, (an under estimate), £16,000^000. That made the total amount of assets £181,000,000. The debt of the colony m 1883 was £27,785,000 ; local bodies, ' £4,197,000; mortgages amounting to £15,000,000; and debts outside the colony amounting to £7^000,000 makin* m all £54,000,000 and leaving a surplul balance to the wealth of the colony of £127,000,000. The average wealth was £227 per head, making this colony al. uaost the wealthiest country m the world Great Britain's wealth per inhabitant was £249; France, £218; Germany £140 ; Eussia, £52 : Austria, £95. -The Australian colonies are put down at £1 97.
