The Wool Market.
The Sydney Mail writes: — "In cori-' Bidering the probable effect of an AngloBussia war upon the wool market, it is well to remember that Russia is herself a wool-producing country, .a*nd that the exclusion of Russian supplies, from the London sates f or ;a year Or. two woulid pr6bably exercise a beneficial effect upon "the demand for certain classes of Aus- : tralian avooL, The import of wool into England last' year amounted to 48,035 bales,- and m 1883 to over 56,000 bales ;■ and the; extent to English factories would be affected by thY .withdrawal of this source 1 of supply may Tie judged irom the fact that 'Of last year's import .18,000 bales went direct into Yorkshire. As "might be expected from the climate, Russian wool is of a rough coarse growth compared with most of our Australian produce, and m its unwashed state it bi'ings from 7d to 8d ncr lb m London. A large proportion of this wool also finds its way to America, aid that line of trade would also probably be stopped by an outbreak of war between England and Russia. On the other hand, the disturbance of trade m England and the probable drawino" off of a large" number oi factory hands for service in^ the army -might be expected to have an injurious effect ; although tins would very likely be cqmpensated for by increased demand from Prance and Germany, so long as those countries were not drawn, into the. conflict. The ultimate • effect' of the impehdin? war would bo beneficial inasmuch as it would cleaT the political atmosphere arid the trade from the manyelements of doubt and uncertainty which now hang over it. Meantime the war premiums which are being charged by the insurance conipanies are already exercising a depressing effect upon the local sales." ... •.
