The Borough Council held an enier-; gency meeting-yesterday - afternoon, aft which, resolutions were passed expressing! entire concurrence with the proposals oft the Government regarding the East and] West Coast Railway. One resolution- was; especially directed to Sir George Grey,; reminding him of his promise, inadej >sbrhe years "ago, that he would'alwaysdowhat he could for the benefit of Grey-; mouth whenever it lay .m his power, and; stating^ that the present was an* oppor-; tunity of rendering great service to the ■ West Coast, and especially .tp;,Greymqtith; which might' riot occur again for many ' years. Yesterday afternoon, a resolu-? tion, signed by over 200 names at Brun- : .norton, strongly endorsing the action of \ the Government respecting the East and ; West Coast Railway, was sent to Messrs] Guinness and Menteath, the repres^nta- \ tives of the district, requesting tli'eni' to do all they Cv/iild to assist the Govern • ment iv -passing their measure. -■• -•; . At the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce yesterday the following resolutions were carried : — " That m the opinion of this Chamber it is desirable that the San Francisco mail service should be maintained ; and that this Chamber is of opinion that a line of steamers running between New Zealand and the ports of Queensland would result m very great benefit to the agricultural interests -of the Colony, and that it would view with favor action, of the Government m this direction, and believes tha^t a moderate subsidy for two years would, m its perr manent .results amply repay the expenditure on the part of the Colony." At a meeting of the Selwyn County Council^ -yesterday a motion ;was: unani= monsy passed endorsing the proposals with regard to the Bast and West , Coast Railway, and" approving of the principle involved tTierein of making the districts . to be benefitted by it responsible for mii terest on its construction. ..-..',-'.•". Mai'or Bodhani arrived rrom Wellington yesterday morning, and, after.maliing -, a, short inspection of the Lyttelton de- | fence works, went on to Port Chalmers 1 by the Manapouri. The Protection Association last night passed a resolution approving the Colo nial Treasurer's proposals ?'fe'West Coast • : Railway. Similar resolutions were passed iat" a meeting hekL. at Sydenham last ■night. At the latter a motion was carried requesting Sir G. Grey to supiport the petitions m favor of the railway as being m accord with his , own teaching. Soven thousanVl seven Hundred and Seventy signatures have been obtained to 'the petitions m favor of the railway forwarded from Christchurch. '■;■-■- ;'•
