Protracted Bankruptcy Proceedings.

A Napier paper of June 30 says : — His Honor the Chief Justice made some caustic remarks yesterday m reference to the -case of the bankrupt Jerrad, formerly Tomoana. The remarks \vere occasioned by a letter sent from Wellington to the deputy assignee by Jerrard, m which he said, ." It is six years since the debts were incurred, and twelve months since I filed, aud I can't see why this little affair should involve so much trouble and bo + her." In v another letter the debtor, said he could not attend the court, as the wages he was earning barely kept his wife and three , children, and he was getting m debt m '. Wellington. The assignee told His Honor that the debtor had expressed him- - self to the effect that ho did not '* care a d " whether he " got through or not."His Honor said it was preposterous for a •" -man who was earning £7 a- week, ,as the debtor was, to'say he could not pay his .- debts and keop' his family, and hinted i pretty plainly that the debtor might find * himself -apprehended if he did' not take care, as he was apparently setting the 1 court at defiance. It was stated during • ,the discussion that the filed statement of ' debts amounted to less than £40. The debtor's examination was adjourned til thfi next sittings of the court after five months from date.
