In consequence of information received the Customs officials proceeded on board the barque Altair, which arrived recently from Lyttelfcon, and instituted a search ) for smuggled goods. Search m the laz- ( arette was made, which resulted m, four- I teen bags of sugar being discovered not entered on the manifest. Captain Munro has been served with a summons charging him with having made a false declaration to H.M. Customs by neglecting to record 14 bags of sugar on the inward manifest. John Douglas, a new chum, blazed away to-night m Albert-street with a five- barrelled revolver, James Rob, a carpenter, and William Noakes, bricklayer, narrowly escaping being shot. Douglas was arrested for drunkenness. Mr Courtney, m whose employ Margaret O'Brien was, offers a reward ot .£IOO to any one who will clear up the mystery of her poisoning. Dcnedin, Saturday. A High School pupil named Wilson had hia oollar bone broken yesterday while playing football. i Christohurch, Saturday. At Kaiapoi yesterday a child of Mr Harris, a carter, m the absence of the mother, who had left a bottle of iodine on the table, picked upjjfche phial and swallowed the contents. Antidotes were U3ed, but the child lies m a very precarious condition. £ Mr John Oliver received a .telegram yesterday from Sir J. Yogel, stating that the Governor consents to unveil the Moorhouse statue. Mr H. P. Blanchard, surveyor, one of the Canterbury pilgrims who came out m the Bandolf, died on Thursday. The boxing match tor £25 a-side between "R. Matthews and ~W. Hurcoobe's " Unknown/" attracted a crowded house at the Theatre Royal last night, and resulted m an easy victory for Matthews who knocked his opponent out of time m the second round. Matthews is considerably the heavier man of the two. " Unknown " does not wish his name made public. A 2.30 this .morning three men — W. Mohr, A. F. Douglas, and P. Douglas — stuck up a foreigner named George Trugeson on the Madras-street railway footbridge, violently assaulted him, and robbed him of a parcel containing a suit of clothes. Sergeant Carlyon arrested two of them soon after, and afterwards got the third man, and recovered the property at Douglas' house. Ross, Saturday. Three very sharp shocks of earthquake occurred at 1.30 p.m. to-day, accompanied by a loud rambling noise.
