Sandon-Carnarvon Tramway.

At the last meeting of the Manawatu County Council the Council went into Committee on a resolution proposed by Cr M'Kenzie " That tenders be called for ballasting and plate-laying the tramway extension," On resuming the motion was withdrawn. Re purchase of rails, it was resolved — " That the Chairman be empowered to purchase the 30lb rails lying at Foxton from the Government at £3 per ton, and endeavor to make better arrangements for hauling those at Patea than the ordinary tariff rates; and if successful, to purchase those also. Resolved "That the Chairman be instructed to make application under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act for £4,500 for the Carnarvon-Sanson Tramway; also for £200 for the Foxton-Moutoa road, £200 for the Sanson-Halcombe road, and for the Carnarvon-Awa-huri road under Clauses 12 to 15 of the said Act." Resolved " That the member for the district, Mr J. G. Wilson be requested to interview the Minister for Public Works to secure the annulling of the charge made for a siding at Carnarvon, station, in connection with the County tramway, as the siding is of as much value and convenience to the Government railway, as it is to the County, and as in other cases where sidings have been put in for other businesses, only a guarantee of a minimum of traffic has been hitherto demanded, and as the tramway has produced minimum, and bids fair to produce far more, it appears an exceptional position has been taken by the Department m this instance, which could fairly be remedied." Resolved " That the Chairman be instructed to solicit orders by advertisement from persons willing to make arrangements to run a coach to meet the train, and also for carriage of goods, and to accept such as he may deem favorable." Resolved "That Mr J. W. Stewart be re-engaged as engineer at the same salary as hitherto for the next six months.
