(UNITED lUIKrtS ASSOCIATION.) Atickland, Monday. Arthur's auction mart was burglariously entered last night. £300 worth of jewellery hail boon advertised for sale to-day. A panel was cut in the back door, but the jewellery had been removed by the proprietor before closing last night, so the burglars were baulked. The Auckland ' branch of the Irish Land League has just contributed £258 to the general fund of the League, £10 to the payment of Irish members fund, and £33 to the A. M. Sullivan testimonial fund. Christchurch, Monday. Colonel Whitmore had a long interview with Volunteer officers yesterday, and explained his views on various matters of interest. The Rev. T. E. Fisher, one of the founders of the Canterbury Auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, has within the last few days hande I to the local secretaries a donation of £'1000 with a request that it be remitted direct to the parent society, and appropriated to the Society's work in China. Dunedin, Monday. At the inquest on the body of John Atkinson, a verdict was found of Drowned. 1 The deceased had been observed fishing by some men at the defence works, having let himself down the face of the cliff about 150ft by a clothesline, and had been warned of the danger. He leaves a wife and four children. After a meeting of the city and suburban mayors, it was agreed that it is desirable that public abattoirs should be erected and managed by the public under regulations jointly agreed on. At Strath Taieri a quantity of oats on Cottsbrook Station was burned, the loss being £350, and uninsured. Invercargill, Monday. McPherson's sawmill at Longbush was destroyed by fire this morning about 7.30. No particulars are to hand. The occurrence is looked upon as suspicious. A large landowner will be brought before the Police Court to-morrow on a charge of attempted arson on a neighbor's stacks. An extraordinary dust storm occurred on Saturday night in the town and district. There was much damage to goods in shops. Some fences were levelled, but no other damage is reported.
