CORRESPONDENCE.

A FURTHER EXPLANATION. T ' THE EDITO't OK TUB STANDARD.) Sir,— My letter published m your issue of the sth inst., has caused some commotion. A letter signed by Councillor Abr.^ianis, and a ropnblicanon with alterations and additions of the former dramatized version of the Borough Council proceedings, appeared m Saturday's issue, occupying m all some 20 inches of empty invective and virulent ihucudo. Mr Abrahams' lotter deserves mention because an asseveration is made that my son and myself were interested m the account for i'l9 10s presented for payment, about which Councillors Abrahams and Park made such a hubbub. In this @onncillor Abrahams is entirely mistaken, as neither myself or my son have a scintilla of interest m thp amount, neither has, to my knowledge, any other person named m the document, every item having been discharged by one individual who seeks to be recouped the Outlay as part of the expenses of the loan proposals which resulted m the success of the proposition. With regard to the garbled reproduction of the former garbled repoit and paragraph before mentioned, I wordil point out that it does not refute one sentence m my letter. Any number of editorial brickbats cannot demolish the truth of my assertion that Crs Abrahams and Park were guilty of gross inconsistency m carping at the payment of the account above alluded to on the ground of illegality, while at the same Finance Committee meeting, Councillor Park and Councillor Abrahams, forming a majority of the Committee, passed an account presented for payment to the Council amounting to Ml 0s 7d m Councillor Park's favor m contra .-cation of the penal clauses of the Corporations A ; ct, and m: the. same breath suggesting that the Treasurer should be asked to resign upon the ground that he was participating m profit m contravention of: the same clauses. No proceedings have yet been initiated to recover penalties against Councillor Park or any other, and it; is time enough to raise legal quibbles when this misfortune should arise, when Councillor Abrahams will bo afforded ample opportunity io shine m His knowledge of the law, and the luminary who .writes the fulsome and untruthful paragraphs will haven similar opportunity. The origin of the attack upon myself: may be traced as far back as the 15th day of April last when I wrote and sent a letter m the folowing terms. — To the Proprietor of the Manawatu Times — I will thank you to relinquish sending the paper to me after this date. — Yours &c, Gr. F. Hawkins. At which +he person now running that paper has evinced some excusable irritation. Another possible reason may be that it is unpleasant to know that an advertisement inserted with manifest errors m it, even without fault on his part, appeared m a rival's columns m a correct form. Other reasons might be suggested, and the morbid appetite of some readers for sensational matter of a personal character may occasion a few coppers extra to be spent m the purchase of his productions. But I trust he will live long enough to find out that these personal allusions to individuals nauseate sensible readers and ultimately lead to disapointment. I have before warned him that lie may spread his wings too wide, and the result would be disastrous to such a fledgling. — I am, &c. ■ : G. F. Hawkins. • P.S. It is rumoured that the next vituperative production will be set to music, m the rendering of which Crs Park and Abrahams will be asked to assist.
