Works attended to. Metalling m Cook-street to Ferguson-street,: 18£ chains, taking out a culvert lacrosse Church-street, metalling 10 chains iii Church-street, made a start m! Pittstreet. Ten chains more m Cnurchstreet require to be done, which wjlltake 10 days to complete with one dray, and from Pitt-street to Mr Powell's m Fer-guson-street will take much longer with one dray from Grey-streefc pit, unless the Council allows me to take the .gravel from the pit m Fitzherbert Road for this piece of work ;. but if wet weather set m carting metal could not be done. It would take this month to complete those two jobs without North -afreet. The two drays would be put on this street when a start is made, and it would take about three weeks to do, there being a long distance to cart the metal. The entrance of North-street had been* repaired and made good, also Broad-street and Rangitikei-street, and a few! loads at the approach of the bridge on Boundary Road, and the culvert completed across Boundary Road. An old culvert near Mr Flyger's store, Terrace End, had been taken out, kerbing placed and footpath made for about 2 chain?. That piece of work was to have been done during the last 2 years, and it was m such a most filthy state that nothing else could be done to it, but it is now a permanent job. Part of the hole on the opposite side of the road had been also filled m. One or two crossings for ratepayers had been made. The footpaths m the Square required screened gravel, aB they are getting very bad m places, they could be done with other small jobs when metalling could not be done. A bridge m Vogel-street had collapsed, and had been left m a very dangerous state which might have caused a serious accident. It had' been temporarily repaired until permission could be got to procure new timber for decking for the bridge, the stringers of which were still sound. Complaints had been received from owners of sections In Church-street complaining of the water from the Square running into the pit from Main-street, then crossing Church-street and an to their land. Inspection had proved that grounds were found to exist for the corn* plaint, and it was suggested that the :mly way to prevent the nuisance comiila'nod of was to block up the cnlvert at iho mouth m Church-streot, and let the [rater remain m the pit until the drain-
age is done, but was left for the Council to decide. Report received, the matter of drainage and bridge m Vogol-street to be referred to the Public Works Committee. INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES. I have inspected throughout the town and I find that alter the rain the a great many places are very dirty for the want of drainage, but ot course I get them to keep their places' as clean lis Tliey can. Of course there are no ways and means for' them to get away their drainage, and it -would not do for- everyone- to have cesspits m their yards or else the water will not be fit for use>; I hope that before long everyone will have proper drainage from their places, which is . most important. All closets ha«s been attended to very well up present time. POUNDKEEPEB'S RKPORT.
