Uhristchurch, Saturday At its meeting to-day, the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce resolved to interest the other Chambers of this and the Australian Colonies m a combined effort to reduce the charges on cable messages sent by the New Zealand line. The Chamber also resolved to send to the South Sea Islands to inquire, m the interests of this part of the Colony, into all matters of commercial interest there, the cost to be borne by subscriptions raised m Canterbury. The Women's Gospel Temperance Union, organised here by Mrs Leavitt, have resolved to take vigorous action m | the city and suburbs. They have been divided into districts for the purpose of a house to house canvass by the ladies, I and public meetings are to be held monthly. | Auckland, Friday. | Charles Hoe, an old man, dropped dead at Otahuhii from heart disease. He had been drinking. The steamer Macgregor has been successfully floated off the rocks at Kawau, and beached at Bon Accord Harbour, whore she will be repaired and brought on to Auckland. The City North Licensing Committee have objected to no less than six hotel licenses being renewed, on the ground of Sunday trading, insufficient accommodation, and not being required m the neighbourhood. Saturday. At the sitting of the Electoral Revision Court for the City North a curious claim cropped up. A protest was entered against Mr J. Ross, of Messrs Sargood. Son and Ewen, who, being strnck off the roll for a freehold qualification for an allotment upon which the firm's warehouse stands m Victoria-street, registered under the Land Transfer Act m the name of Sargoo I. The question was adjourned m order that Mr J. C. Campbell, solicitor, might call evidence to show cause to have the name retained on the roll. Considerable importance attaches to the decision, as it is considered it will effect all joint stock and other companies ot the city, by giving ail shareholders possessed of i>2o a qualification to a vote. Wellington, Friday. The manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company received a cable message from London to the effect that the meat by the s.s. lviiapchu has arrived m bad condition, m consequenca of the piston of the freezing machinery having broken on the voyage. At an inquest oh the body ot Mr Wilding, who died m the coach on the way from Foxton to Wellington, the post mortem showed that death resnlted from the diseased condition of deceased's heart and lungs, and a verdict was returned m accordance with the medical testimony. Saturday. The Colonial Insurance Company received a cable stating that the barque Lochnagar arrived at London on May 2ad. Dunedin, Friday. At the City Court to-day, Sydney Knight was sentenced to two months' hard labour for assaulting a Chinaman. Tite evidence disclosed a shocking state of immorality, the prisoner obliging his wife to live with Chinamen. He is we 1 connected m England, and is understood to be a remittance man. HU children appeared m court yesterday charged with theft. Saturday. Andrew Dalziel, one of the original Otago settlers, died yesterday, aged 80. A man named W. B. Stanley, while cleaning the spouting on the roof of the City Hotel, slipped and fell through a skylight, falling a distance of 35 ft on to asphalt m the back yard. His injuries terminated fatally. Mr Biley, an undertaker of Bulls, died this morning through inhaling the effluvia from the corpse of tho Parawanui chief, Kawana Hunia, while laying it m the coffiu last Tuesday. !
