Personal.
A charge was made last night by certain Ceuncillors that the Standard had been guilty o{ making public certain business done in 'Committee m reference to the Borough Loan. This very serious charge, to v newspaper of any standing and reputation, it is our intention to ask to have fully investigated and either substantiated or withdrawn.. We shall communicate with the Council on the subat its next meeting, requesting an inquiry. As the oharge is utterly without foundation, so far as our knowledge goes, we trust the Council will do us the simple justice of affording us an opportunity of clearing ourselves of the charge laid against us, which virtually amounts to one of a breach of confidence of a most unjustifiable character, as on the occasion m question the Press were allowed to remain on the 'express understanding that the proceedings were not to be reported, the Council being m Committee. A breach of this stipulation is what the Stanpard is now charged with.
