Horrible Occurence Near Christchurch.
A CHILD BUttNED TO DEATH. (UNITED Pll SS ASSOCIATION.) / Cheistcjujhcii, Tuesday. A sad ooonrren-'o happened at Shirley, near Christchurch, tli's afternoon. A labourer named Briggs and his wife, left lite cottage they occupied about 10 o'clock. Their three children, tne eldest a boy aged 4 years and 3 mouths, remained behind. A coal was burning iu the grate. Mrs Briggs returned >»t 2 a.m. On eutering the house she found it full of smoke. On tin; floor Iny the oldest child dead, liis body charred almost to a cinder ; while beside him lay the yonujjesl child, a boy 11 months old, burnt severely üboul the lower part of be body.ji'tio tuir.l ciiil>l,two yeassold, whs standing in a corner of the room. A hole a foot in diameter was burnt in the Hour where the bwiy was lying, and a. smaller hole near. It is supposed that hiu clothes caught lire at the grate, aud he rolled about the room till he died.
