Wellington, May 6, The Governor has commuted the i sentence of death passed on Prender- i gast, the Pokeno mnrderer, to imprisonment for life. The Nautical Court gave judgement; to-day m the case of the wreck of the barque Oceania. They found the accident attributable to an error of judge n.ent by Captain Firth hugging; the land, but under the circumstances it is not considered necessary to recommend that his certificate We suspended. Captain Firth was, however, ordered to pay costs of inquiry. ' The barque Carl Booth, Captain Nieraan, 98 days from Mew York, arrived this afternoon after an un. eventful passage, This Day. It is understood that the Commissioner of Customs has ordered a report to be made to him of the action of the authorities regarding the mail steamer Zealandia at Auckland, especially as to the statement which alleges that the Captain threatened to turn a jet of steam on to a ! steamer which was cruising about, and as to a passenger being forcibly detained. It is understood that the Commissioner holds that as long as the Lumpers' Union do not trangress the Iliw it is not right that the aid of the law should be invoked against them. The Government propose should Parliament approve of the Colony being represented attheColonial m London to appoint Dr Von Haast to have charge of the exhibits, but the AgentGeneral will be the chief Commissioner. The Hons.- Buckley and Tole, who are Commissioners to take evidence m the Bryce-Rusden case, will leave for Wanganui on Saturday, and will commence taking evidence on the 11th inst. Witnesses from Itangitikei, Wanganui, and Parihaka, will be examined, and subsequently the bodies of the persons alleged to have been ruthlessly murdered will be exhumed, Ministers have drawn un a memorandum on the proposed Imperial Act for constituting an Australasian Federal Council.
