(UNITED PRESS ALSOCIATION.) Inveroargill, April 29. Thomas Ferretter, a prisoner m the gaol, was brought up this morning at the Police Court, charged with an aggravated prison offence. He was ordered bread and water for 14 days. During the hearing of the case he applied the most foul and disgusting language to the Kesident Magistrate. The same prisoner recently got six months for assaulting a warder. CtiKisTcmmcH:, April 26. The Westland County Council has guaranteed .£IOO and the Boss Borough Council ±'25 towards the preliminary expenses m connection with the "West Coast Railway. £280 additional has also been guaranteed by private persons. The Nelson delegate has cabled that there is every reason to believe that the scheme will be entertained m the London market after the present crisis has passed. At Rangiora this morning Mr Charles Hotham, a malster m the employ of Mr J. Manning, of the Burton Brewery, dropped down dead, it is supposed from heart disease. The prisoner McClure, who was convicted of malingering a short time ago, was to-day proved guilty of insubordination and threatening language to the warders at Addington Gaol. He was sentenced to 30 days m irons ; and as he left the dock he said they would have to bury him before the 30 days were over. The Directors of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company report the receipt of intelligence* from their works up to Friday, April '24th, on which date the depth of No. 4 bore was 115 ft. To-night a of Irishmen m the city was convened' by Mr R. Holmes, M.H.R, when steps were taken to establish an Irish Brigade. Dunedin, April 29. Mr J. C. Buckland, M.H.R. for Waikouaiti, has been m communication with the Minister of Public Works regarding
the grain rate, and has received an assurance that the Cabinet have decided to make the reduction uniform throughout the colony, to come into torce as soon as the instructions can be issued.
The Mosgiei Woollen Factory have concluded a contract with a local firm to light the factory with the electric light. The installation will comprise 300 Swan incandescent lights.
Five stacks of grain near Waikouaiti, valued at A'2oo, were burnt down to-day — not insured.
Heavy falls of snow have already taken place at "Waikaia and other elevated places of the district.
