Murphy, who was defeated by Donovan in the glove tight on Saturday night, has not yet recovered from the injuries. Woodyear's Circus, has averaged £80 a night here, and Miss De Grey is doing business nearly as good. Sarah Thomas, aged 16, an inmate of Mrs Lowies' Women's .Reformatory, attempted suicide by stabbing herself at that institution yesterday, and lias since been committed to the Lunatic Asylum. The injury is not dangerous. She had been under treatment at the Hospital. Chbjstchurch, April 27. Mr C. T. lek, formerly Mayor of Christchurch, died this morning. Oam abu, April 27. A threshing mill and two stacks of wheat were burnt at Ngapsira on Priday last. The mill was insuied for £220 in the New Zealand office, but half was reinsured in the Colonial. The wheat was insured for 2s 6d per bushel. Mrs Learitt, the representative of the American Christian Women's Temperance Union, closed a successful mission here last night. She was presented, by the Blue Ribbon Army and Women's Committee, with twenty guineas in recognition of her services. After paying all expenses connected with the mission, the Blue Ribbon Army handed Mrs Leavitt the suw of .£ll. Dunedin, April 27. At a meeting of tho Standard Property Society tho report recommended the payment of no dividend, and the shareholders expressed dissatisfaction at this. The 50 mile bicycle race was won by F. A. Cuttem, in Bhrs 13min llsecs. Mrs Harkntss attempted suicide by cutting her throat. The Artillery made splendid practice on Saturday, every shot hitting White Island. TAUBANaA, April 27. Mr Sheehan arrived per .s.s. Taupo oh Saturday, and was welcomed by a large and influential deputation, requesting him to address tho electors. Mr Sheehan also received a deputation from tho Natives in the district, 'who sent him an assurance that he would have their undivided support. Mr Kelly and his supporters are also actively engaged in canvassing. . Carterton, April 27. At the annual meeting of the Pastoral and Agricultural Soeiety, held on Saturday, it was decided to include a horticultural, poultry, and doj; show, also cattle and horse fair, and a ewe and lamb fair on separate dates in the Society's operations. Kumara, April 27. The first sod of the second sludge channel to relieve the first was turned on Saturday afternoon by Mis R. J. Seddon, in the presence of several ladies and about 200 miners. There were great rejoicings on the occasion, and speeches were made, in which the present Ministry were applauded for assisting miners and redweing the price of water. The length of the proposed channel is thirty-nine chains. It is to be completed m eight months. The new channel will <>naple all parties to work simultaneously, instead of in shifts, as at pi esent.
