In the House of Commons last night Mr Gladstone urged the adoption of the extraordinary vote of credit of eleven million sterling in a most powerful speech on the AngloI Russian situation, in which he dwelt strongly on the necessity for Englandtobe prepared to carry out to the utmost extent the pledge of support which had been accorded by the Government to the Ameer of Afghanistan. Mr Gladstone added, however, that notwithstanding the preparations which were being made, Her Majesty's Government were striving by all means in their power to bring about an amicable, but at the same time, honourable settle.
