DEFENCE OPERATIONS.
In connection with the appointment of Sir G. S. Whitmore it is understood that negotiations with Colonel Hewitt were broken off owing to the difficulty of settling conditions with him, and also that Government deemed it advisable to have an officer in command on the spot without delay. Sir G. S. Whitmore's appointment will be subject to the approval of Parliament, and it will then be decided whether his accepting the position will affect his seat in the Legislative Council. Waiau, April 27. A meeting of settlers was held at Waiau to-day with the object of forming a cavalry corps, when forty-five names were enrolled, and more who wore not present are expected to join. The Minister of Defence was telegraphed to, asking f r assistance in the way of arms, &c, and also Eaikoura was communicated with, asking to join in the movement. The meeting adjourned until Tuesday next to consider the answer of the Minister.
