THE PUNIU CONTRACT.
(UNITRD PKBSS ASSOCIATION.} Auckland, April 20. Telegrams from Waikato stale that considerable astonish ruent is felt there at the Government, m the Pa niii Railway contract, insisting on putting; new clauses, m the contrast, providing that the work shall be slopped if war .should break out with Russia. The contractor for the Turango spction (Mr Tsaac Coates) expressed his willingness to accept such clauses, provided the Government would compensate for the plant, and qmterial m use at the time of the stoppage »nd pay for work done. This the Public Works Department would not agree to, and a remonstrance was forwarded to Wellington, when the final reply, it was stated, would lie made ou Tuesday. The New Zealand Herald says : — We understand from the Minister of Public Works that the clause which has been inserted m the Turango contract is to the etteH that m the event of the loan not being raised, the Go verniuenl. shall have the power to stop the work wirhont being liable to any excessive claim for compensation or for loss m the contract. There is nothing about a declaration of war m the contract, but of course that event may form an ( element through th« Government not being nl»io to raise a 10'.n,"
