(OtfITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, April 16. The Eoyal Humane Society of Australasia has bestowed a silver medal on William Fotiki, the Maori lad who made such brave exertions to save the Rev. Mr Morice at Port Molyneux. The New Zealand Agricultural Company's homestead at Longridge was burnt down this morning, and the inmates had narrow escapes. Mr James Kerr, the overseer, was badly burned. The. -building was insured for Ji-300 m the National, and the furniture for £130. Auckland, April 16. The Auckland Society of Arts' medals for musical composition have been awarded by the judges, Professor Tendall, of * Christchurch, and Judge Fenton, to Allan Whitehorn, Miss Bella Hitchings, of Napier, being specially commended. At the inquiry into the wreck of the barque Matthew at Kaipara, the officers and crew were acquitted of blame. At a meeting of shareholders m the Rotorua Railway Company a resolution was passed authorising the Directors to sell the Hue to the Government. Christchubch, April 16. The Hon. W. J. Larnach, Minister of Mines, arrived this morning. He will visit the Malvern coalfields to-morrow and Saturday, and then go on to the. Wilberforce Quartz Reefs. Yesterday lorty-eight men received passes to the Waiau at the Public Works Office. This makes a total of 180 passes issued since the recommencement of the unemployed agitation a few weeks ago. The Hon. W. J. Larnach arrived this morning by the Waihora. He left by train this afternoon for the Malvern district, and will spend about a week examining the mineral deposits of the interior. Cristchurch South- West and Avon districts have pronounced, by large majorities, against any increase m public ticenses. The Directors of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company report that the new twelve-inch bore has been started, and already shows oil at a depth of 70ft. The delay has been occasioned through the total wreck of the steamer Thomas Russell, m which were the new twelve-inch stove pipes and bits. > These had to be madeae;ain m Christchurch andforwarded to the works, and are now m use. Shareholders will remember that this bore is being put down m the position recommended by Professor Hutton. Wellington, April 16. A house occupied by Peter Bell and Patrick Loulin at Paikakariki has been destroyed by fire, everything being destroyed; as the occupants rusheel away immediately the fire was discovered, as there was a quantity of dynamite oarfc. ridges stored m the building.
