A Long Bicycle Journey.
One of the longest journeys ever accomplished on a bicycle m New Zealand (says the Post) has been performed by Mr T. A. Field, of Nelson, during the past fortnight. Mr Field started from Nelson with the intention of riding down to Invercargill, but m consequence of an injury which he sustained en route he was unable to get further than Palmerston South on his machine. The distance between Nelson and Keetton, 130 miles was ridden m 2£ days, while the road from Reefton to Greymouth was traversed m7^ hours. Six hours was taken to accomplish the journey between Greymouth and Hokitika, and two days were occupied m riding between the latter place and Chrisfcchurch, a distance of 160 miles. On the second day 90 miles were covered. Between the Cathedral City and Palmerston South 90 miles were done m one day. Ashburton, Timaru, and Oarnaru were passed through. Just before reaching Palmerston South Mr Field injured his knee, and was obliged to take train for Dunedin and abandon his intention of riding to Invercargill. The total distance ridden was 560 miles. The bicyclist was compelled to ford several rivers on the West Coast, but, fortunately, none of them were high, Owing to th© early sunsets, Mr Field was prevented from doing any long runs during his journey. The bicycle used was a 40-inch "Facile" safety, a kind of machine which is becoming very popular m Great Britain.
