Swan, the long-distance pedestrian, had completed 250 miles at 10 p.m., two hours and fifteen minutes before the expiration of half of the time — six days — m which he has to accomplish 500 miles. The quartz sent by the Christchurch Mining Company to be crushed at the Thames yielded at the rate of loz 12dwts of retorted gold per ton. The quartz weighed over three tons. Sir Julius Yogel has arranged for the Government to purchase the Bakaia and Asbburton Forks Bailway, subject to the ratification by 'Cabinet, Parliament, and the shareholders. About 1000 people arrived by excursion train from the South this morning. A deputation of sixteen ladies waited on Sir Julius Yogel to-day, to ask him to procure legislation providing that women should be allowed to vote m all questions under the Licensing Act. Sir Julius replied that he was m favor of the general franchise being extended to women, but not m this particular direction alone. At the Supreme Court to-day most of the time was occupied with the trial of Austin Tyrell, John Arthur Cotton and William Peacock, accused of rape, which resulted m a verdict of not guilty against the three, it having been elicited for the defence that the woman was a consenting party t® a certain extent. Jones, for forging a cheque for .£8 ss, was sentenced to two years' hard labor ; "William Rhind, for larceny from a dwelling', to eighteen months ; and George Barker, an old offendor for petty offences, was convicted of robbery with violence to a girl under 14, and sentenced to five years' penal servitude. Dunedin, April 9. Mr Larnach arrived at Lawrence yesterday on his return trip to the goldfields. He will arrive m town on Friday, almost directly leaving again for a visit to the Wilberforce Reefs, m Canterbury, thence going to the Thaines-Gold-fielcjs. The Mosgiel Woollen Company has declared an interim dividend at the rate of 10 per cent. A difference has arisen between the Chairman and the Engineer of the Harbor Board over the question whether the works m the Upper Harbor are being carried on m accordance with Sir John Coode's plan or not. The feeling of the Board to-day was that the present relations could not last, and a Works Committee has been deputed to inquire into the whole matter. An accident occurred at the Kaitangata coal mine this morning, by which a young man named -G. Carr was killed while the men were working at an early hour m the incline ot the new drive; Two of them accidentally let a box run, and this caught the deceased, who was working at the bottom of the incline, and crushed him against another box. His injuries were so serious that he died at B o'clock, A girl, seven years old, named Kate Martin, was drowned at Waikouaiti on Monday last. She was crossing a deep ditch on a plank, and fell m. Auckland, April 9. The Aurora has arrived from Tonga with 100,000 oranges. The Crown Prince of Tonga is dead. The Premier has bean persuaded to go overland from Whangarei to Kaipara, and then to pass through So Auckland, visiting settlements en route. The Bank of New Zealand shipped by the Botomahana four boxes, containing 37870z. of gold, to be transhipped at Wellington for London. TiMA'<u, April 9. At the Harbor Board to-day a resolution was passed offering Mr John Goodall an appointment as consulting engineer, he having accepted the appointment of engineer to the Napier Harbor Board. It was also decided to get a Bill introduced m the in-coming Parliament to empower the Board to borrow a sum not exceeding £100,000 for the continuation of the breakwater and wharves. A man named Lucas was arrested this morning on a charge of stabbing his I wife yesterday, shortly after child-birth. Thames, April 9. Three tons of quartz- for the Wilberforce, Canterbury, were recently crushed here, and though the result has not transpired, it is understood to have been satisfactory. The gold obtained was . worth £3 18s per ounce.
