(UNITED PRKSS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, April 8. Sir Julins Yogel and party will leave Christchurch for the North by to-morrow, night's steamer. Colonel Reader arrived from Wellington this morning m the Hineruoa. He had v private interview with the Hon. Colonel Brett and the temporary officers of the Canti-rbury Reserve .Corps, at the City Council office. The Hon. J. Ballance, Minister of Defence, is expected here to-morrow. A letter has been received stating that Mr Blackburue, the celebrated chessplayer, now m Australia, will be unable to visit thin Colony as he intended. An excellent sample of flint glass has been produced at the Kaiapoi Glass Works. Since the commencement of Lieutenant Booth's temperance mission, 43 persons have taken the pledge, and 1050 blue ribbons have been distributed. Dunedin, April 8. The City. Council has an overdraft of £42,765 at the expiration of its 'financial year, compared with £36,000 last year. The Warwick takes a cargo of wool, valued at £98,000. Nelson, Apvil 8. The new bridge across the Wai-iti river at Wakefiold was opened yesterday by the Hon. Joseph Shepherd, M.L.C. There were nearly 100 perepus present to witness the ceremony. The following persons are definitely announced as candidates for the Waimea seat :— Messrs Kerr, W. N. Frauklyo, W. White, and Jesse Piper. The latter was a candidate at the general election m opposition to Mr Lovestam. Auckland, April 8. Colonel Lyons notifies that all Volunteer companies will require to b« made up the full strength — 64 men. At preseut some number only 40. W. A. Thomas, tobacconist, who was arrested on a charge of arson this morning m connection with the Victoria street fire, was brought up at the Police Court and remanded for eight days. Bail was allowed. The case of arsou against Hertsog was on all day at the Police Court, and was adjourned.
