AUTUMN MEETING.

Bentley— Clerk of Course : Mr j. Xane. The above meeting was held yesterday and everything won't off very smoothly and pleasantly. The weather was all that could be desired for outdoor sports "but the attendance was not what might have been expected under such favorable circumstances. If the meeting was not such a great financial sucess, it was no fault of the office-bearers who did all that could be done. The arrangements were perfect and carried but to the satisfaction of all, the- secretary, Mr T. King, fulfilliug his arduous duties m a manner which reflected, credit on himself aud showed he was tlie right man m the right place. The racing on the whole was very good, several of tho events being woll contested and causing a good deal of excitement. Two horse 3 fell m the hack hurdles and a boy was thrown m a flat race ; m the former cases no injury was done and m the latter the jockey wag .only. .stunned for a time but soon recttvei'edV This was about the! only accident of any consequence which occurred during the day. The absence of actual drunkenness was particularly noticßable with the: exception of one or . two individuals, who got up a fight which caused the usual excitement on such occasions. Host Akers of the Club had the grand stand booth and provided refreshments m his usual first-class style. Mr Abrahams seemed to do a thriving business wjith his totalisator, ill 138 having passed through it or about i J 200 more than at the last winter race meeting. The Volunteer band added considerably to the days enjoyment by playing at intervals during tho day. The following are the events : — Handicap Hurdle Race of 3d soys; nomination 1 soy, acceptance 1 8ov ; 2 miles, over eight flights of hurdle. 3ft 9in high. Mr D. There were only three -horses entered for this event, the two first being even favorites on the totalisator. -Skylark .took the lead for about a voile and a-half when Rambler overhauled him winning by about four lengths. Mr Davidison's Beauty Bright ... 1 Mr Amon's Friday 2 Mr Quinlivan's Dew Drop, Mr Hawkins' Gundagai, Mr Hillerman's Canary, Mr Brown's Touch-and-go, Mr Bowen's First Whip, also ran. This race was pretty certain for Touch-and-go, but he ran off at the second hurdle, and was out of it though he came into the . straight- m the lead and deceived many. The two first being close up was the cause of a good "deal of excitement it being doubtful which ' would~ take tho money. Totalisator £108, dividend £1 9s. Maiden Plate of 25 soys ; entrance 1 sot ; distance 1 iv iles ; weigh t for age ; open to all horses that nave never won an advertised race prior to date of entry, after which the winner of any such race to carry a penalty of 51b. Lena went away with the 'iead but was soon overhauled by My dream with Nil Nesperanduni close up. Polly got a' bad start and lost [ her chance. After the i race £21 was bid i for the winner. The Palmerston Guineas, a handicap of 100 guineas ; nomination 1 sor, acceptance 2 soys; distance If miles; the winner of any. race of 100 soys after the declaration of weights to carry a penalty of 51b, of .£l5O a penalty of 71b. This was •the- event of the day' and was the best contested. jGermaine was the favorite, Ascot being -{fifth on the totalisator. Ringleader took the lead and held that position till, he ran off near the entrance gate throwing his rider and leaving it to Ascot and Germaine, the two latter passing the stand neck and neck closely followed by Shamrock and this position was maintained to the finish. In coming up the straight Ascot and Germaiue were alternately shouted by the spectators and not a little excitement was the result of this close race, Ascot carrying off the money' by a neck. Hagar was the favorite but did not show up till after the straight was entered and was not noticed till near the stand when he shot past the two foremost horses and winning on the post to the astonishment of all. Totalisator .£153, dividend Bs. Flying Handicap of 40 soys; distance 6 furlongs; nomination 1 soy, aecoptauce 1 soy ; the winner of the Palmerston Guineas to carry 71b penalty. Mr F. W. Harrison's eh ta Lady Florence, 4yrs, 63t 41b ... ... 1 Mr H. O. Williams' eh h Danebury, aged, 9st 2 Laurel, Slave, and Ascot were scratched. Only two horses started for this race, Danebury being the favorite but the old horse had to take second place Lady Florence winning as she liked. Totalisator' £l29, dividend ill Is. The Officials' , Hack Race of 10 1 soys ; once round the course ; entrance 1 soy, open to hacks owned and rid Jen by stewards, officebearers, or . couimitteemen connected with this meeting, and must have been m their possession for one month prior to date of entrance ; open only to horses that have never won public mouey, hack races excepted ; weights not less than 12st ; riders to be m proper racing costume, officials up, forfeit of 10s .for eligible non-starters. Mr Pringle's Lady Napier 1 Mr Robinson's Royalty . ... ... 2 Mr Pratt's Flatcatcher, Mr Johnston's Consultation,- Mr J; King's Gwendoline, Mr Prendergast's Kairanga, and Mr Aker's Beeswax also ran. The race lay between the two first and and was well contested Lady Napier winning by a length. Totalisator dividend J£3 13s. ■
