Serions Accident.

We regret to learn that Mrs H. S. Palnierson sustained a severe accident ou Saturday * afternoon, by which her leg was fractured just above the ankle, ft appears Mrs Palmersnn was driving m: a hug^y with Mi«s Clapper ton and another lady, when part of the harness gave way, and when the horse was pulled up it commenced to kick very violently. Mrs Palmerson either jumped out or was jeiked cut, which caused the severe injury which has prostrated her. The accident occurred near the Wesleyan Church, and Mrs Palmerson -was carried into Mr Innes' house, and Dr Macintirc sent for at once. When the horse commenced to bolt Mr Cr. Eltlershaw was riding 1 behind, and at once galloped up and tried to stop the horse m its headlong career. He shouted to the two occupants to keep their seats, as their only chance of safety. By this time one of the shafts of the buggy was smashed, and by striking against the horse terrified it still more and urged it to greater speed. When near Mr Pal m en»on's gate it made a frantic ruch for the entrance, but Mr Eldershaw intercepted it and seized it by the bridle, and though unable to stop it, he managed to turn it off from the entrance. Had it rushed m, it is not improbable both ladies would have been seriously if not fatally in T jured. He now saw that the only chance was to tire the horse out, so j he let it run down Victoria street and turn into Grey-street* the animal kicking all the way. He guidod it along Rangitikftistreet, and round the Royal Hotel corner, where a numW of persons made a futile attempt to stop the animal, but whose cries, excitement, and gestures only male matters worse. Hound into Broad-street the race continued, when Mr Eldersliaw could see that his liorse wan able to " wind " tho animal m the buggy. Near the Catholic Chapel he managed to pull it up, when both ladies dismounted. Immediately he got the horse out, the broken shaft struck it, and it broke away, and was not retaken until Mr Elderahaw- overtook it near Terrace End and brought it back. Beyond a ; severe fright, aud the shock of the incident, the- ladies who remained m the hugsy received no injury whatever. The action of Mr EUWshaw was as plucky and self-pos messed as it jh possible to conceive, and he incurred a risk m his gallant attempt to prevent a serious accident which

very few horsemen would have dared to entail. We leavu that the same horse previously runaway with Mr Eng'.s kikui's cart, which it nearly smashed to pieces. But for the cool and plucky act recorded above, it is quite possible both ladies might havo been maimed for lite or fatally injured. On inquiry 10-dny we learn that. Mrs Paluiorson is progressing favourably, though suffering acute agony intermittently.
