(UNITED PRESB ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, March 31. A boardingliouse at Mcßae's, known as the Temperance Hotel, was totally destroyed by fire on Thursday last. It contaiued seven rooms, and was owned and occupied by Mrs Sarah Rich. The fire broke out about 2 c'olock m the afternoon, und is supposed to have been caused by the overheating of the stove pipe m the kitchen. Mrs Rich had left for Dunedin half an hour before, and her daughter wus m charge of the house. Mrs Rich intimates her loss at £§0 over the insurance, including £50 m notes burnt. Invercargill, March 31. Mr Burnett has closed his temperance mission so far as Invercargill and suburbs aro concerned. He now goes to the country districts for a fortnight. Yesterday he visited the Gaol, and created .such a feeling among the prisoners that several took the pledge. To date, m and around Invercargill, .upwards of 600 pledges and sixty recruits m the Rlue Ribbon Army are the result of his mission. • Auckland, March 81. The Australia left for San Francisco this afternoon with 197 passengers, 68 being from Auckland. Among the latter were Mr Ashbury, ex M.P.^for Brighton, and Lord Elp.hinstone. The Anckjand Agricultural and Mercantile Com party has declared an 8 per cent, dividend. The post and telegraph office at Pukekohe railway station was " burgled " last iii gl"t. The safe was unsuccessfully attempted. Mr Napier counsel for Sheehan, accused of the Castletown-Roohe murders, does not attend at the Supreme Court by writ > of habeas corpus, but has instructed a leading solicitor to defend the prisoner at the Cork assizes. Detective Walker and Sergeant Dunn, with the .prisoner, expect to catch the R.M.S. Ruapehu. OHKiSTCnuRCH, April 1. . About ten last night a most carefully planned attempt at arson was discovered m a three roomed cottage at Ashbourne, belonging to a cabman named Richard Hawker. A man passing the house noticed a light shining beneath the front door, while all the rest of the house was m darkness Thinking this strange he looked m under the door and saw a candle burning m the midst of paper. The police were called m, when Beveral candles were found alight m the kitchen. The paper surrounding the candleß were saturated with kerosene. Attemp3 were made to prevent the lights being visiblo outside. The house was insured iv the London and Lancashire for £100 Hawker bus been arrested.
