Badham'of Tasmania recently engaged m superintending the fortification of 'Irasmauia, will take charge of shore .batteries and artillery ia Wellingtons _/liieur. Douglas, H. N.. of Halcombe, has been appointed to taico charge of all fort defences m Wellington. H<» has had considerable experience m naval warfare and the use of torpedoes. An English oflioer, now m Canada, ia likely to be entrusted with the whole of the volunteers m New Zealand. His name is withheld but he is said to be an officer of high rank, and has been recommended to that position by the Governor The appointments of Capt. Badham, Lieut. Douglas and the commander of volunteers will probably bu permanent. Major Cautley is to proceed to Lyttelton and Dunediu m a few days to arrange for placing the guns m position at those posts. The defence works at Auckland are. to be commenced on Monday. The Government are m treaty for an armed cruiser of the Esmeralda type, capable of- steaming about 10 knots. Torpedo corps are to be added to each naval corps. An order has been cabled for torpedoes to the extent of £50,000.
