GREAT DAMAGE TO SHIPPING AND PROPERTY IN AUCKLAND.
(united prkss association.) . Auckland, March |15. The gale yesterday was the heaviest experienced for many years, and it inflicted some damage on shipping, and property. The small steamer Blanche is a total wreck'; insurance unknowns Several yachts were damaged, and the yachts Muritai and Eita are ashore, but are not seriously injured. A. number of coasters were damaged. The cutter Evening Star is ashore at Bangitoto Channel, arid the Harvest Home was sunk m the harbor. The crew of the latter had a narrow escape before they were rescued. The Union Company's' coal hulk canted,,and went ashore, but was uninjured. The old Customs launch was badly knocked up. The Darcy Pratt, brigantine, held on with two anohors down m the Eangitoto Channel, after dragging considerably. Several houses m course of erection m exposed situations m the suburbs were blown down ; also slates, chimneys, . trees,' yerandahs, &c. A large chimney was blown through the roof of Mr Seymour Thome George's residence. Miss Pearson, 6f Newton, received a fracture of the leg, and Mr D. L. Murdoch'is coachman, Welsh, fatal injuries from falling timbers. The damage is estimated at over i-2000.
