The effects ol Saturday's gale have been felt all over the Colony. In Auckland very serious damage was done to the shipping. Some . buildings., and chimneys were blown down, and one or two persons were seriously injured. ;In Opunake a large two-storey wooden huilding belonging to Mr W. Courtney (who is now lecturing m England m a private capacity as emigration agent) was hlbwri down ; "and m Hawera the force of the gale was very much felt. In Wellington, the harbor was rougher than it has been for a long time past, and frequently the spray broke over the breastwork, but we are happy to hear that ho serious damage has_ been done. A number of the small yachts and sailing boats, anchored off the'Te Aro foreshore, fared rather badly, having been either driven ashore fir sunk, and. among the latter Mr E wing's new steam launch. The cutter Dove was also badly knocked about, and eventually driven towards the remains of the trestlework, where she got stranded. Ah immense crowd of people gathered at the bottom of Cuba-street and the Queen's Wharf to watch the effects of the storm. The amount of the damage is not yet known. At Island Bay, the Volunteer encampment suffered considerably from the storm. Several tents, among them the officers' mess tent, the canteen, refreshment booth, ammunition tent, and one or two of the ordinary tents were blown down. The trees and shrubs m various parts of the town have also been much damaged. Just as the Circus band, at the conclusion of Saturday afternoon's performance, played the National Anthem,' a terrific gale swept across the enclosure, striking the big tent. The side wall poles of the various tents were snapped clean m half by the force of the wind, which ripped the canvass to pieces. Mr Wooctyear has sustained a very severe loss. Until something is done m the direction of repairing tlxe tents, the company, consisting of fifty performers, will be at a standstill for a day' or two. ;
