EXCURSION TRAINS.
. At the request of a considerable section of the public -we would point out to the Railway Department that now v when occasional excursion trains are being tried as an experiment, the advantage is invaluably reaped by the residents of the towns. Excursion trains have been run from Napier to Tahbraitej but jiot vice versa. On St. . Patrick's Day a cheap excursion train, is to be run from: Wanganui to Patoa at very low rates and if an excursion train w«re run, from Manawatu to Wanganui on the previous date, tickets' to be good for three days, no doubt a good number of people wonld avail themselvhs of the opportunity afforded of visiting Wanganui, and seeing the Waverley and Patea. districts at the same time; All along, the townspeople seem to have been chiefly, cared for m the matter of these excursion trains, but the residents of the couutry districts have been neglected or lost sight of by the department. The more popular railway .travelling is made, the better will the railways pay. If excursion trains from the towns are. as a rule well patronized, there is little , doubt that facilities offered to the country people, and the residents^ of country towns .would be largely availed of. "We do not mean on race days, or any public gathering at one special centre, but periodically all the year round. Let^ the country people enjoy the saiho privileges as do the townspeople m |he matter of occasional cheap trips : on the line — not Saturday return fares — but such a liberal concession as will entice people to travel who under no* other circumstances would have left their homes.
