Schools m Hawke's Bays
The Hawke f s Bay State Schools appear to be m a nice condition. In schools calculated to* accomodate 1700 children there are 2700 m regular attendance, and 600 others do not attend school because of the lack of room. To provide accommodation sufficient even for present needs would require £GOOO,but the Government grant is only £2100, and part of that has been anticipated. Several districts offer to pay half the cost of enlargements or new buildings, but the board cannot find the other half. Five schools have been built by people on condition that when m funds the board would repay the money, but nothing has y»-t been repaid. Over the whole district, 123 children attend for every 100 places provided. While, however, Europeans cannot get schools, the Maoris have only to ask to' get schools and teachers' residences, though three out of four Maori schools already built are closed. The board wanted to get several of these schools to re-open as mixed Maori and European schools, but the first application has been unsuccessful,
