CORRESPONDENCE.

Our Hiew Bailiff.

(TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD.) Sm, — By last evening's Times 1 notice that Constable Manning has beeu appointed Bailiff of the RM. Court here. It does seem very strange that the constable should be saddled with the extra duties of bailiff, when it is i etnuuibered that six years ago Constable Gillespie was relieved of the bailiffchip on, the grounds that be .-could not perform the combined offices elnciH.ntly. TJp to the present time the duties of }>ailitf have been managed .separate from the police. Notwithstanding this fact, •be Palmeraton press have repeatedly urged the necessity of a second constable brang appointed. Palmerston has grown vapidly during the last six years, and as a matter of fact the police duties have increased accordingly. Constable Gillespie was a most efficient officer, and if he could not cany out the combined offices six yeais ago, I fail to see bow oar pre-K sent guaidian of the peace can possibly. Like kissing, this appointment may have been made through favour. If so, the sooner tho matter is exposed, and those who are responsible for this injudicious appointment are. hauled over the coals the better, I merely write this letter m the hope that some light may be thrown on the matter, and at the same time show the authorities that we are alive to the absolute necessity that our guardian of the peace may not be saddled with offices which will interfere with his police duties or affect the public weal. — I am, &c, Pro Bono Poblico. Palmerston, Feb. 20th, 1885.
