Gold Discovery near Wanganui.

(Herald). The following letter has been sent to Us and with it two pieces of quartz dis; tinctly shewing gold : — " Tokoinaru'i February 18, 1895.— Yesterday, as I was digging for water In a tributary to the Mangatukituki stream, and about four feet ft'QTO the face. X came upon & thin layer of gold-bearing quartz, evidently a blow from the reef at no great distance. The specimons by bearer will show what I picked, and broke (a pieoe about the size of a hen's egg). Kindly mention m your columns, and oblige, yours faithfully, J. P. Macdonald." The looality indicated is a few miles beyond Upokengaro, we believe. Of the quartz itself there can be no question as to its being genuinely auriferous, and strongly indicative of a payable reef m close proximity to where it was discovered. If Mr Macdonald found, it as stated m the letter, the discovery is a most important one, and should be investigated further without delay by people trained m the work of prospecting. We have no reason to doubt the hondfide^ gf $hp writer, and shall await with considerable interest the further development ot his claimed discovery of auriferous qiiartz at Tokomaru. The quartz may be seen on application at the fferala oifi.ee, Victoria Avenue, by anyone #esU'oua of examinjag it and judging of its value,
