The date of the banquet to Sir Julius Yogel has been definitely fixed for the 12th March. Feb. 15. Reference to General Gordon's death was made m all the churches here today. The " Dead March " was played m some, and prayers were offered for the extrication of Lord Wolseley's army from their critical position. The shops will be closed and minute-guns fired to-mor-row. Auckland, Feb. 14. - The fifth regatta of the Auckland Rowing Association was .held to-day. What with postponed races and walkavers, it was a comparative failure. The railway authorities started cheap Saturday railway excursions to-day. Patronised by only 150 persons. James Thompson, a half-caste, of Kopua, has been arrested at Te Awanautu, charged with stealing nine cases of printing type, value .£2OO, part pt ; plant used m printing Government paper Pihoipihoi m the olden days of the King movement. The prisoner was remanded. .. '■.:■'--- . Invebcargill, Feb. 14. Harvesting has been started m several parts of the district, the recent hot weather having caused the crops to ripen fast. The yield is expected to be above that of last year, although the small bird nuisance will affect the result m some cases. A large area has been devoted to oats, but the amount of wheat grown is much below that of former years. Dunedin, February 14. The splendid weather for the past week, which promises to continue, has brought the crops forward fast. Harvesting is beginning m the Southern districts, and the results are expected to be very satisfactory. Feb. 15. At the Port Chalmers Police Court, on Saturday, J. Stevenson was charged with a breach of the Police Offences Act, by working bis horse and dray on Sunday. The evidence showed that he had been carting slaughtered sheep to the local refrigerating works, and that they would have been spoiled by the hea^ if not sent to the freezing chamber, on that day. The' magistrate dismissed the charge, considering the work • one of necessity.
