Dairy Factories.

I Opunake Correspondent of Hawcra : 1 :.#sW,.].. The date upon which the share ■list of. the Opunake Dairy Factory Company, Limited, closes is drawing near. A few facts on the question of the dairy factory system may be interesting to lighten the darkness, for which purpose quotations from a letter recently received from an authority m the Waikato are interesting, as follows :-^-" We are paying 4d per gallon, although all other factories are paying but 3Ad V . ... . . but I would rather recommend you to begin with 3£d ; and you may tell the intending milk suppliers from me that although Syi .looks small, it will pay them better than auy thing they have been doing for some time. I am milking 32 cows at present, and. they are making me over 30s per day Don't let the factory fall through from petty jealousies. Pknow what sort of things those- are ; they ; strangle many good intentions, and other things which might greatly benefit a district. Go on and prosper;"; A large number of settlers have the idea that as they cannot be milkr suppliers they will receive no benefit by supporting the dairy factory. There cannot be a greater fallacy than this, as it cannot be disputed that every industry which is carried on m a district must be. beneficial to eveiyone residing m that district. Farmers who are not milk suppliers will find .# more ready sale for a certain class of stock to supply to those, who will be contributors of milk, and they, although not such direct gainers as the milk suppliers will' be, must be considerably ; benefited by cthe factory,; and as they will be improving their own position, it surely is not vory. much to ask that they should expend a small: sum m: bait before they endeavour' ;to share the •profits of more enterprising anglers. As the provisional directors will no doubt heed 1 to set to work as soon as possible after; the closing: of the share list on the 17th instant ; it is to be hoped that all applications will be m by that time, and that no one, however little their interest or remote their resjdence m the district from this place, will fail to have a share, however small, m the company. : "There "is another reason why settlers should bestir themselves to make the proposed undertaking a s jjidybss. district for jm&ny ! m iles round is exceedingly interested m the questipn .of improvements to tb^ bay. What stronger argnment jcould there be m favor of some works being undertaken than that the dairy factory of Opunake was importing, v/say, 1 00 tons of cheese a year (inde-* pehdendent "of a large export of ojher. farm^ produce) ? and that tfi^o-figfi^ie'gfe'ai^su'ceess which had attended the workiug of that factory, it was proposed to start half a dozen others within the district ? Would no.t, this,, be a Result worth cpntributitfg^dPSo how cati r anyone be so near-sighted as te think and say that they are not intejested m takeing shares m the company to bring about this result? Union is strength ! The settlers of the district, near and remote, must go hand m hand m this matter, with the determination to succeed ; arid who can then doubt the result ? : The hand has been put to the plough, and must not be withdrawn.
